screenshot shortcut not working

Suddenly the screenshot commands are not working.

Command (⌘)-Shift-3

Command (⌘)-Shift-4

When I use both commands, my computer just makes that loud alert sound when you can't complete a task/action you are trying to do.

I have no idea when it stopped working or why. Can anyone give me suggestions on how to fix this?

Might be a corrupt .plist.

Do a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.

Quit the application.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.

Restart the computer, open the application, and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

This problem happens to me pretty often in El Capitan. My workaround:

  1. Bring up the keyboard shortcuts like Robn Hood Six describes
  2. Change the key sequence to something else (doesn't matter what)
  3. Press the other key sequence to bring up the crosshairs
  4. Press Esc to abort the screenshot
  5. Change the key sequence back to the original setting

Then the original key sequence works again, for a while anyway. Or I can reboot, but then I lose whatever I wanted to take a screenshot of.
