Q: I am a new mac user.

I am a new mac user. I am using OS 10.8.3 Q: Can I upgrade to 10.9.2 as i have tried and having problems. Please help!

Also when i checked on all software updates they are not supported by 10:8:3 is there another OS I am missing to upgrade. What is / is not supported?

You are on 10.8.3, did you try upgradeing to 10.9.2 and failed or are you asking can I upgrade to 10.9.2? I'm not sure if your question is "can I upgrade" or "I tried and failed"

10.8.3 is not the final version of Mountain Lion. Mountain Lion's final version was 10.8.5. Most of the testing of Mavericks (I'm guessing) was installing over 10.8.5. I would do that upgrade first. That is, upgrade Mountain Lion to 10.8.5.

After that, make a good backup before trying to install Mavericks.

The update you linked to will not install on your Mac since you are not running a version of 10.9.
If you want to run Mavericks, you have to get it from the App Store. It is a new Version, like going from Win 7 to Win 8.

If you go to the updates tab of App Store, it should show that there is an update for 10.8.5 as ssls6 mentioned.
Does that not show up there?

You are welcome.

One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install Mavericks, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything.
Check to make sure your applications are compatible.
