why do I have a deleted user folder in my side bar. when I open iphoto in this folder I am told it is locked, I have to close and reopen with the option key depressed. ther are photos in this folder that I thought I had lost. its like I have two iphotos on my computer.

Have you deleted a user account at any time since you owned this Mac, and was the Mac bought new or used.
the mac was bought new and I transfered all data from my old mac using the mac tool to do this. I have never deleted a user acount however if I log on as a guesed the system works like it should. I have allways had a few quirky things happen when I log on to my addmin acc. I have had folders in my side bar in finder that should not have been there.one of which I was unable to open. this problem fixed itself with upgrades.
If it already had a user account at that time it was not new, whatever you were told.
