The latest nano uses the Lightning connector, so it's not "30-pin" in any case. What is "the car's multimedia interface"? Does it connect to the Nano directly, without any adapter? Is there a cable, do you use your own cable, or does the nano go into some type of "dock"?

Does the car audio system also have a standard USB port? Does it have an auxiliary audio input?

The car has what is described as a MEDIA-IN multimedia interface (5 volt). Its double the size of USB. It is supposed to support "USB mass storage devices......such as MP3 players, iPods and USB sticks" via an appropriate adapter cable. Because I had a 7th gen. Nano, the dealer gave me a cable with a lightening connector. The Nano gives me a message saying that the accessory [car entertainment system] is not supported. There is no other USB connection - only card reader.

At moment I have a clumsy work round with music playing via bluetooth and Nano connected to an old Belkin TuneCast to keep Nano charged (connected via the USB cable supplied with the Nano to the Tunecast plugged into the 12v socket).

I'm sensing that my only hope with this is that VW come up with a software update sooner or later. Still waiting to hear from them. I was hoping to get some comfort from others having same problem .

When you connect it, you said the Nano give you a message that the "accessory" is not supported. What about the car audio system. Does it acknowledge that a device is connected? In recent car audio systems, the iPod is just treated as a storage device, like you connected a USB flash drive with song files. So what the iPod tells you should not matter, because the car audio system is "in charge."

When you connect the iPod, do you need to tell the car audio system to use the iPod as the "source" for songs (versus the radio or other source)? What happens when you do this (assuming the iPod is seen as being connected)?

You said they supplied you with a special docking cable with a Lightning connector. Is it possible that cable is faulty?

If it says USB in the menu (even if it is currently greyed out because nothing is connected), there must be a USB connection. It would makes sense to have a USB port somewhere, because a lot of people put songs on a cheap USB flash drive and connect it to the car audio system (not an expensive and independent device like an iPod). Have you tried connecting your USB docking cable to that connection and connecting your iPod to the docking cable (instead of the cable they provided)?

No. They tried a different cable at the garage - and as I said before the Nano wouldnt work in other showroom golfs (including top of range GTI!).

I'm sorry: misled you with ref. to USB, should have said SD card. I suppose I could put music on a card - wont give me the full on-screen functionality I was looking for though. Otherwise, I'll just have to rely on bluetooth

Still waiting to hear ftrom VW.

Hi MiniEggs,

My problem has resolved itself - dont ask how; I dont know!! I just connected it up one day and it started working - has been ok since.

The mk7 comes with a choice of cable that connects into a 5v "Multi-media" interface in the small compartment in front of the gear stick. If you use a 7th gen nano you will need the lightening connector. Rather than have two cables you will need to switch between (its quite fiddly getting your hand into the interface) you will be best advised to have phone with lightening connector as well.

Dont know what you mean by discover system.

The mk7 also has a slot for a memory card and a CD player in glove compartment.

Hi PJ,

I'm experiencing the exact same problem - 7th gen iPod Nano won't connect to my Mk 7 Golf using the Lightning connector. I tried a friend's iPhone 5 and that worked immediately, and the Nano will also connect through bluetooth rather than the cable.

Can I ask, did you by any chance take the car to a dealer for a service in between the iPod not working and then magically beginning to work? I'm wondering if there might have been an upgrade to the car's firmware (which they may not have told you about) which triggered it working.

I can't think of any other way of resolving this - like you, my iPod's firmware is bang up-to-date, so there's nothing I can do there.

Cheers,

TR

Hi,

I have a brand new Golf Variant MK7 with Discover Pro Navigation, and all Apple devices I have do not work. My iPhone 4G, a friends 4S, my wife iPod nano 3G...all do not work. Bluetooth works fine, but I wanted to control via USB....

Just left my car for a full day at the car dealer with no luck, they are going to ask help for VW HQ, but I'm a bit bummed with this... I also tried with another MK7 Golf with the Discover Media radio and also no luck.

Hope VW/Apple solves this issue soon...

Cheers

Tom, my car was brand new- as was the Nano. The garage couldnt get my Nano to work in any other golfs in the showroom. They said there was no available update and no known problem. The technos at VW hadnt come up with an answer before I got it working. When I first used the Nano it had only got a couple of tracks on it (they might have been WAV). Later when it worked I had more but I cant think why that would solve the issue. I really have no idea what caused it to start working - it has been absolutely fine ever since. I can only suggest playing around a bit - try different file types, mine are mostly WAV converted to AAC but ripped CD's are also fine. All my stuff is AAC. Best of luck.
