What year is your machine (and the model identifier)?
How much free space is on your hard drive?
And, how much RAM do you have installed?

Mar 21, 2014 9:32 AM in response to barbarafromgreenwoodby Eric Root,Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
- MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
Check to make sure your applications are compatible.
Applications Compatibility (2)
If you can/do upgrade, I recommend you make a copy of the installer and move it out of your Applications folder. The installer self-destructs. The copy will keep you from having to download the installer again. You can make a bootable USB stick to install using this free program.

Mar 21, 2014 2:34 PM in response to barbarafromgreenwoodby babowa,Okay, there shouldn't be a problem with the hardware or specs, so I'm not sure why it didn't work.
What was the error message you got? And, did you buy your machine new or used?
By the way, I've asked the hosts to remove your serial number.......

Mar 21, 2014 3:09 PM in response to babowaby barbarafromgreenwood,★HelpfulThank you!
I thought when copying that I left off the serial #.
All I remember was that the message was installation failed. I will try again later tonight and see what happens + take any notes of the error message.
Appreciate your help!

Mar 21, 2014 8:39 PM in response to babowaby barbarafromgreenwood,OK--tried to install again this evening.
Went through download successfully, signed agreement w/password.
Closed open applications and went to restart.
Appeared to be installing. 10 minutes in went to failure with the following error message:
"OS X can't be installe on disk Macintosh HD because a recovery system can't be created.
Visit www.apple.com/support/no-recovery to learn more."
Restart to return to previous operating system.
Did that now going to bed.
Maybe another day. Will check the Apple website eventually when time.
Thanks!

Since you do have Lion installed, I must say I don't understand why you'd be getting that message - you should have a recovery partition which should have been created with Lion.
