swipe up from the bottom of the home screen to get the control centre. In the row of 5 circles is the fifth one a picture of a bell? If so touch it to turn muting off. (a diagonal bar will appear through it).
If, on the other hand, the fifth is a picture of a lock, then you have the side switch set to control muting. Move the side switch to turn muting on/off.
finally, make sure you do not have the volume turned all the way down.
