    No, you do not need it.

     

    You might want it, if you want to have the latest capabilities and features. You can read about those on the Apple web site. But if your computer is working fine and you see no need to change things, there is no need for you to upgrade.

    If you don't need new features, the only reason to upgrade is when the OS that you use is no longer getting security updates, like Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Windows XP. But Mountain Lion is the previous OS so it's still very new and will be supported by Apple for a few more years.
