Need help with Select Text appearing whenever

Wonderful gift from my son, Love It. But...what am I doing wrong that causes Select Text to appears most times I touch the screen (w/stylus)? This happens more than 80% of the time., no matter what screen I am touching and at times when I touch a blank part of the screen to the right of text to remove it, it will reach all the way to the left of the screen or to wherever there is text to again show the blue screen to copy. I understand that when appropriate this is a terrific tool, but I have tried touching the screen quickly and lightly, but then I get nowhere. Enlighten me please. Obviously still iPad illiterate. Thanks, Pat

you are probably bouncing your touch slightly, making the iPad think it is a double touch, used to select text.

why not try using your fingers instead of the stylus until you get the hang of it. you will be able to feel through your finger better what contact you are making with the iPad

And, yes, a light touch is preferred, but it doesn't necessarily have to be quick
