I am not sure what generation my Apple TV is, I bought it a couple of years ago, but cannot update it no matter what I try. I would really like to update it, but don't know how. I try to update it and it runs for a long, long time and then says it can't update at this time.
Are you having any streaming issues with the device or is just the update? Ensure router is up to date.
Check istumbler or netstumbler to get a report of your network, to see if there's interference.
If on wifi try Ethernet
My Router is up to date. It's an issue with my Apple TV. My newest Apple TV updates just fine - it's my older one that I am having problems with. There is no problem with my Network as the other Apple TV updates in no time at all.

Well, I fixed it and was able to download the latest Apple TV update. This is to help anyone who has this problem with an older Apple TV. On Apple's website it suggested that you "reset" and restart the Apple TV setting it back to the Factory default. That is what I ended up doing and it worked. Then all you have to do is sign on again and set up Netflix. I also set my Apple TV to download updates automatically now.
