Does iMessage cost money if it's with someone out of the country?

I want to imessage my friend from the UK but would it cost extra money since it's out of the US?

iMessage uses data, just like email. The only cost you would incur is the cost of data usage. If you have a data plan, then it counts against your data usage. However, if the user in the UK is not connected to data at the time, then it could revert to an SMS, which will in turn charge you for an international SMS. You need to make sure both of you have an active data connection at the time of the send to make sure that you are not going to be charged in any other manner. You can also remove the checkmart by Send As SMS so that if the iMessage fails, it will not revert to an SMS message.
