    Hello PCphins,

It sounds like you are trying to connect your iPad 4 to your Apple TV with a Bluetooth connection. It looks like the Bluetooth functions are limitted to keyboards only according to the following article:

Apple TV: Using the Apple Wireless Keyboard

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5633

    Compatibility with other Bluetooth accessories

    • Bluetooth support on Apple TV is for keyboards only. Headsets, speakers, and other devices are not supported.

If you are wanting to play videos from your iPad to the Apple TV you can use the Airplay feature. This page has additional information about that:

    https://www.apple.com/airplay/

And here is how to set it up:

iOS: Use AirPlay to wirelessly stream content

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

    All the best,

    Sterling

    He'll Sterling r,

Thanks.  It's helped me get to the bottom of the issue.  Basically the Apple TV was working fine but neither of my iPad 4s had the 'AirPlay' symbol on it.  I contacted the apple helpline and they basically asked my to reset my broadband router ( switching it off for 2 mins then powering back up); then do the same on my Apple TV box, then switching my iPad off and off.  That did the trick.

However a day later the same issue happened again, and based on the advice of a friend, I've followed the above again (which worked) and then in the 'Setting/General' part of the Apple TV I set the sleep to 'never' (ie always on).  Now fingers crossed it will continue to work as the issue occurs seems to occur when the Apple TV goes to 'sleep mode'.   Thanks again as I was barking up the wrong tree.
