Q: Upgrade to mountain lion

I have managed to upgrade my old style mac mini to Lion OS, I have 2gb of ram and a Intel core 2 duo processor 1.83ghz

According to the app store my machine meets the requirements needed, Lion installed fine, but the download for Mt Lion won't even start, saying

it isn't compatible with my machine. The spec needed for Lion and Mt Lion on the app store appear to be exactly the same, so why can't I do it.

If I can get to Mt lion then I will be able to access better app's which currently I can't download either.

An alternative would be for me to download older versions of the app's for example pages or numbers, but of course the app store just has the recent versions, does anyone know how to get older "more basic versions" of such software?

I am just converting from PC's to Apple and still getting used to it...

Thanks in advance if anyone can give me a pointer in the right direction, I think my Mac is a pre 2009 version and the Ram is an upgrade to 2gb.

Mac mini, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8)

32 bit versus 64 bit efi.  Your hardware is not capable but it's not because of Ram or CPU.  It's a efi thing.

You can no longer get Mountain Lion. You can download the current version of OS X which is Mavericks. The download is FREE from the App Store.

I strongly suggest installing more RAM. 4 GBs is a usable minimum.

You must meet the other requirements:

    Upgrading to Mavericks

You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.

    Upgrading to Mavericks

To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

        OS X Mavericks- System Requirements

Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks

             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later

             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later

             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later

             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later

             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later

             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later

             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later

To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

         Are my applications compatible?

See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.

    1. The specifications aren't the same. Lion requires at least a Core 2 Duo or Xeon processor. Mountain Lion and Mavericks require that the computer be fully 64-bit.

    2. Buy them from a source such as Amazon or eBay, or get them from the developer's site.
