iPod touch 1st Gen. Headphone jack...HELP!!!

So I had my 1st Generation iPod touch for years now. I actually kind of lost a few years back and now I found it (under my bed all along)! If you didn't know the 1st gen. iPod touch doesn't have any speakers so to listen to music you have to listen through it from a headphone jack. So I tried listening to some a-ha but there was no sound. I couldn't hear a thing. I started twitching my headphones a little bit and the music came but it was all clutter. Finally, after several minutes of twithing and turning...I could hear the song but then my headphones moved a little and the sound became clutter again. After more intensive tries, I came to the conclusion that the headphones have to be in a VERY precise location for it to work properly. I also used the same headphones on my laptop and they were flawless. So...how do I fix this problem and is Apple going to help me on this or do I have to buy something to fix this? Please help because I had this thing for a long time now and I really don't want to throw it out.

Try looking in the port do see anything foreign, lint, dust cobwebs? If you see something try blowing the port out with canned air to clear it. If clear, then try plugging and unplugging the headphone jack several times 10 to 12 times should do it to clean up the contacts in the port, sounds like corrosion or dirty contacts may be preventing a good connection. Good luck, Cheers.

If cycling the plug n the jack does not solve the problem

Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for this price. They do not fix yours. However, it is not worth it for a 1G iPod

Apple - iPod Repair price

A third-party place like the following will replace the jack for less. Google for more. Agin, not worth it.

iPhone Repair, Service & Parts: iPod Touch, iPad, MacBook Pro Screens

Replace the jack yourself

Sorry man, I know you said the headphones work, but, just to rule it out do you have another headset you could try? Did cleaning improve it at all? If it did you could try another round of plugging unplugging or try rolling a piece of emery paper (the finest grit you can find) give it a couple of passes in the port, but only in and out 2 - 3 times, blow the grit out, if it's corrosion that should clear it. If it's a bad port then your back to Illaass suggestions. If it were me I would I would take a crack at replacing the port myself. If I had to pay someone else to fix it, I think I would walk away from this iPod, in terms of electronics, it's a dinosaur. (Then again I still fool around with a Power PC Mac clone, just because I still can). Good luck, Cheers.
