Prior to Mavericks when you wanted to tag a file or folder you could highlight it with a color. This gave a 2-dimensional feature to the file system and a heirarchal order. In Mavericks, this highlight function has been replaced with a colored ball or tag that sits next to the file/folder name. Why? The 2 dimensionality is now lost.

Mavericks uses a different tagging style, than previous OS X releases. There is no OS X setting that will change this tag style. If you take a tagged file from Mavericks and access it from Mountain Lion or earlier, it will be in the style of the earlier OS X.
In other words.....too bad!

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.
