If the computer shipped with 10.6.8 or earlier, connect its original thumbdrive, restart it with the Option key held down, click on it, and install a fresh OS. On a newer MacBook Air, connect it to the Internet, press the Command and R keys at startup, and use Apple's Internet recovery system instead.

thanks, but I lost the original thumb drive its a 3.2 late 2010 macbook air
Can I still use the command R method?
You may be able to if the computer's firmware is up to date. If it doesn't work, phone AppleCare and order a replacement.
