How can I connect an unofficial PS3 Controller to my MacBook?

I know that official controllers are fairly straightforward to connect under Mavericks, using a USB cable and bluetooth.

However, mine is an unofficial controller without bluetooth connectivity – it works by its own dongle.

The dongle isn't even recognised, having looked for it through Bluetooth Explorer in the Hardware IO Tools for Xcode pack from October 2013.

Can anyone suggest any other way to get the MacBook (a 15" mid-2012 model) to recognise the controller?

MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2012), OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)
