iPhone: Troubleshooting a cellular data connection

Symptoms

This article will help you troubleshoot these cellular data issues on your iPhone:

Resolution

Follow these steps for help troubleshooting cellular data issues on your iPhone. After performing each step, please test to see if the issue is resolved.

1. Toggle airplane mode: Tap Settings, turn airplane mode on, wait three seconds, and then turn off again.
2. Restart your iPhone.
3. Make sure that your software is up to date:
   • Check for a Carrier Settings Update: Tap Settings > General > About.
   • Check for an iOS Software Update: Tap Settings > General > Software Update. Note: Some updates may require a Wi-Fi connection.
4. Remove the SIM Card and reinsert it. Allow the iPhone to acquire the network again.
5. If your SIM card has SIM PIN enabled, try turning it off: Tap Settings > Phone > SIM PIN.

When you open 'Find My Friends' and look for your son, there should be an update button that look like a refresh circle with an arrow.

What happens when you tap that button?

If it continues to fail, check your son's cellular data conenction on his iPhone in Settings > Cellular. make sure it's on and Find My Friends is on at the bottom of that list.

Next check his location services. Go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services and make sure Find my Friends is turned on.

Next check the Find My Friends App on his device. Tap 'Me' at the bottom and make sure he is not turning on 'Hide My Location'. If you are trying to track you kids in stealth mode, they tend to find this feature quickly to keep them off your radar 😝

The issue you have described is related to either a voluntary 'Hide' or an issue with the cellular data since it works fine when he is at home on wifi (if you turned off wifi i'm sure you would have the same issue at home).

What does it show now to the right of the Carrier at the top? Blank, 3G, 4G, etc?

Open Safari (with Wifi still off) and try to load the website: appleid.apple.com Does it load?

Look in Settings > General > About and see what Version it shows. If it's not ios 7.X then go to Settings > general > Software Update and see if he can update to iOS 7 so you can get that Settings > Cellular functionality.

Check Settings>Cellular on his phone to be sure the app is turned on. If it isn't, it doesn't have a cellular data connection and thus drops when he leaves your wifi.
