iCloud backup fail

Hi,

the iCloud backup on my iPad Air (iOS 7.1) fails.

I tried deleting the iCloud backup, turning off/on backup. Still fails. My iCloud backup on the iPhone (iOS 7.1) works fine!

When I look into Xcode / Console, I see the following errors:

Mar 22 18:11:56 Rolands-iPad-5 backupd[462] <Warning>: WARNING: Error putting item into chunk store: /var/mobile/Media/iTunes_Control/iTunes/MediaLibrary.sqlitedb (b12a5ad5e199d4f2fe91130a8205ae5562f3aa68): Error putting item into MMCS (MBErrorDomain/302). Underlying error: The server returned HTTP status code: 500 (com.apple.mmcs/6).

Any ideas how to fix this?

thanks, Roland

This may be caused by a corrupt existing backup that needs to be deleted, or by data on your device that is causing the backup to fail. To troubleshoot these, try deleting your last iCloud backup (if you have one) by turning off iCloud Backup in Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup, then tap Manage Storage, tap your device under Backups, then tap Delete Backup. Then go back and turn iCloud Backup back on and try backing up again.

If it still won't back up, you may have an app or something in your camera roll that is causing the backup to fail. To locate which one, go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage, tap the name of your device under Backups, under Backup Options tap Show All Apps, then turn them all to Off (including camera roll) and try backing up again. If the backup is successful, then the camera roll and/or one of your apps is causing the backup to fail and you'll have to located by process of elimination. Turn the camera roll On and try backing up again. If it succeeds, turn some of your apps to On and try backing up again. If it succeeds again, turn some more apps to On then try again; repeat this process until it fails. Eventually you'll be able to locate the problem app and exclude it from your backup.

thanks for your reply - I trigger the backup by selecting 'Back Up Now' in Settings -> iCloud and after 5 minutes or so the error message is 'the backup failed - Last Backup: Never'

No popup or something.

I haven't tried from a different wi-fi connection - why would that make a difference (see the server error 500)? Again, the backups from my iPhone work fine (same wi-fi connection).

Trying form a diffeerent Wi-Fi connection jsut rules out a network issue 100%. Network issues can affect one or some of device, but leave others untouched, so try that if its easy for your.

Otherwise, do a backup to iTunes on the computer, then restore your iOS on the iPad. Set the iPad up as new and try to create a quick iCloud backup (Should be super fast since the iPad is empty at this point). If it succeedes, restore your iTunes backup back to yoru iPad and try to backup to iCloud once more.

If it works now, then it was an issue with your iOS. If it fails only after restoring from your itunes backup, then there is some corruption in your backup.

I am having a similar problem except that now it is affecting both my iphone 5s and my ipad Air. both 64gb and both on 7.1.

Have tried all the steps suggested including turning off icloud completely and deleting all backups. If I watch in xcode I see varying errors related to:

<Warning>: WARNING: Error putting item into chunk store: /var/mobile/Library/SMS/sms.db

But the file itself varies. I have also tried turning off imessage and turning off all apps in the icloud backup.

I've tried creating a new icloud account and the same failure applies.

Have tried on various WIFI networks to rule out a network issue. The kicker is sometimes it will work and will back up. However even if I change nothing on the phone after getting a successful backup, the next one will always fail.

So even if I can get a backup to work, immediately after I click Back Up Now and it fails with some varying error.

Have also tried the backing up to itunes and then restoring, setting up as new and trying an icloud backup and it still fails. Yes I am able to get to a secure website on both devices.
