How to get rid of genieo search on safari?

I have genieo virus on my laptop, macbook air OS X 10.9.2.

As soon as I enter a name in the safari address bar, I have genieo search appearing.

I've read lots of things and tried many solutions but nothing works and it's terribly irritating.

My default search engine is Google.

I removed extensions and have none.

I've uninstalled Genieo.

I can't seem to find any file with genieo name in my laptop, not even in library folders.

What can I do? Please help!!

MacBook Air, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

when i did that and right click and finder it said the file couldnt be found.

Not sure what "that" was, but note that some of those files will not be found and in the two months that have passed there is a new version of Genieo with different files in different places. I recommend you follow some up-to-date instructions on the Adware Removal Guide as you may have installed some other variety of Adware. Note that his Adware Removal Tool will eliminate all currently known Adware, but you may still have to adjust your home page and/or search engine settings after all files are removed.

okay, i skimmed the page,

What page?

i located two links that had Genio in it and moved them to the trash and then emptied the trash is that ok now?

No. That's not at all what I suggested.

Look, this is a complicated process and the tool will make it easier, but if you don't understand the instructions then you will need to get help from somebody that does.

You must download and run the tool in order to be certain you're OK. And even then you'll probably have to reset your home page and/or search engine.

If the page you're referring to is the Adware Removal Guide page on Genieo removal, skimming it is absolutely NOT okay! You must read it carefully and should not even attempt to begin the process if you don't understand the instructions. As the page points out in great big bold red letters:

If you do not follow these directions exactly, you could cause your computer to freeze and to be unable to restart!

If you don't understand the instructions, and are not willing to run the Adware Removal Tool that MadMacs0 referred you to, then you should not do anything further. You could end up losing the use of your computer until you can find someone to fix it for you. Find a tech-savvy friend or relative who can sit down in front of the machine and follow the directions for you.

Installed Genieo accidentally, in a bundle with pesky Tuneupmymac, which I keep blocking but not uninstalled yet. Safari totaly messed up now. Was all fine until then.Tried removing Genieo by carefully following the the updated instructions kindly provided by thomas_r's link. Could not find files listed as /Library/Launchagents... and /Library/Launchdemons ( the ~/Library/Launchagents/... were found and deleted).

However, when launching Safari in order to remove the Omnibar extention (step 5 in SafeMac link), Safari was using Genieo for search (ok, that was still not the end of uninstalling), but more importantly, Safari preferences became unopenable (clicking on it makes safari quit). I found Omnibar extension in one of the libraries (I think; sorry, I didn't write it down where exactly), removed it manually, re-started, emptied trash, re--started again, but the problem persists.

I could just re-install Safari, but whilst looking through all the files, I found that I still have InstallMac folder in Applications, with the same date of download.I believe it's part of the same Genieo nonesense. Didn't dare chucking it, in case it requires more delicate approach.

Worried if anything esle may be still left behind. Could you possibly suggest the best way to get rid of InstallMac and check for other remaining bits?

Thanks a lot,

Elena.

Sounds like you have probably not found all components, and/or have not changed your browser's home page according to step 6 in the directions.

One alternative you could try is to run my Adware Removal Tool instead. It will automatically remove all components of any known adware. It will also take care of resetting your home page (in Safari, at least) if any adware is found.

Thanks a lot. Just ran the Adware Removal Tool; it did it very quickly and nothing was moved to the Trash, which probably means that that the files have already been deleted. The homepage is now re-set. However, I can still not open Safari preferences (Safari quits). Also, the folder called InstallMac (containing a Reset Search application) is still in my Applications. Are you sure the removal tool removes all the important genieo files?

It removes all known components. A folder called InstallMac in the Applications folder isn't part of the known set of files. Do you have any idea what you might have downloaded that included InstallMac, and where you downloaded it from? It looks like you may have a newer variant than any I have seen.

Also, what Safari extensions do you have installed? Look in the following folder:

~/Library/Safari/Extensions
