Downloading iWeb

I am new to the Mac world and own a Mid 2012 MacBook Pro. My laptop is running OS X 10.9.2 Mavericks. I am into publishing websites and heard the iWeb is a really good software. Since iWeb no longer comes on Macs the only way that I can download iWeb is by purchasing it on a disk format from Amazon. I am wondering what version of Ilife i should purchase - 2009 or 2011 as I heard iWeb is the same on both publications of iLife. Also when I put the disk in my laptop will it download everything - I only want it to download iWeb since I already have Garageband, iMovie, and iPhoto. Could you also tell me if I could host my iWeb website through Yola web publishing or GoDaddy. And finally what is iDVD all about?

Thank you very much,

Supergabe

iWeb is the same in both versions but I believe there are more templates in '09. However I would strongly advise you not to start using iWeb at this stage. It's no longer supported, will never be updated, and already the earlier version does not work with Mavericks. It's likely that sometime in the future a system upgrade will break it, then you will have the hassle of having to remake your site.

There are many alternative options available - the subject has been discussed in a number of threads in this forum. Everweb from Rage Software seems well liked (I've not tried it myself) and is designed to be very like iWeb with some extra facilities.

If you do buy the iLife set i believe you can customize the install but in any case you could simply delete the other applications.

iDVD takes movies created in iMovie and makes DVDs of them, enabling you to add attractive menus. This also has been withdrawn since Apple in its wisdom believes you should be uploading your movies to the internet. I believe (though can't confirm) that the last version works with Mavericks, though the same problem applies - sooner or later it will break. Unfortunately there are few alternatives: Toast can make DVDs but with very limited menu options.

Thank you for your help but I have a few questions. If I were to purchase iLife 09 would it work with Mavericks as you said the earlier version of the software does not work with Mavericks. In the last paragraph you said that you believe the last version of IDVD works with Mavericks - does this mean if I were to purchase iLife 09 to get more temlates on iWeb that iDVD would not work. And finally I would just like to make sure that if I were to purchase iLife 11 or 09 it would not bring me back to a earlier version of Garageband, iMovie, and iPhoto it would simply make add older version to my laptop - so I would have two seperate applications the older and the newer versions and I could then just delete the older version of the apps?

Thanks so much,

Supergabe

I'm afraid I can't answer about versions of iDVD in the two boxes. You could ask in the iDVD forum.

The version of iWeb is the same in both boxes, and I understand it works with Mavericks.

I would imagine that you can choose which applications to install, and in any case it shouldn't over-write a later version of GB with an earlier one, but again, you would do best to ask in the GarageBand for Mac for Mac forum.

Both iLife 09 and 11 have iWeb 3. You can do a custom install of just iWeb from either disk so as to not affect any of the other iApps you currently have installed. However, there's no guarantee that the next OS upgrade will be compatible with iWeb 3.

Additionally, I strongly second Roger's suggestion of changing over to a currently supported web application that will have features way beyond iWeb and be compatible with current HTML standards.

EverWeb is very iWeb like in it's user interface and how it works but has many more advanced capabilities. It has a free demo version that you can try before purchasing.

If you know HTML coding and want an app that will let you insert HTML code directly into an web page as well as drag and drop try Flux 4. It has a demo version and several excellent video tutorials both at their site and on YouTube. Flux does have a steeper learning curve that EverWeb.

For the curious, here's an iWeb page and the same page made with HTMLEgg on an iPad and with Everweb.

http://egestas.sytes.net/Home.html

http://egestas.sytes.net/Egg.html

http://egestas.sytes.net/Ew.html

The theme is from an iWork Pages template.

The Egg and the Ew page took 15-20 minutes each to create.

I leave it to the experts to explain how it was done.

Hint : I cheat. The game is rigged and the table was tilted (I heard the line in a movie)
