Q: Magic Mouse; erratic tracking

Hi

Recently, my Magic Mouse has begun having tracking issues after I upgraded to Mavericks. Currently on iMac Mid 2010 v10.9.2.

1) It first started showing signs when the arrow on-screen stops moving momentarily even when the physical mouse is still moving.

2) Then it started jumping around the screen even though the mouse is just moving in one direction on my table.

3) I tried using it on different texture surfaces with mixed results. Matte surfaces worked for a period of time, however it doesn't work now. I even tried the junk mail trick, using glossy surfaces but to no avail.

4) I have a ProLink bluetooth mouse with me labelled 2.4GHz wireless mouse with this USB bluetooth stub that is inserted into the USB port in order for the mouse to connect to my iMac. (i'm not a techincal guy)

5) When I lift the Magic Mouse off the surface, the green light becomes solid. If I remember correctly, the light was blinking when I lift it off the table some time back. Not sure if this is an indication of the tracking problem or not.

6) The touch gestures and clicks on the mouse still works perfectly though. With all the scrolling speed and two-finger gestures etc still working.

7) The batteries are new.

8) The tracking glass underneath the mouse is clean and devoid of scratches.

9) I have a 2.4GHz and a 5GHz WIFI connection. Even though I saved the 2.4GHz connection settings (it can connect), I'm currently using the 5GHz connection for my iMac and every other devices near my iMac.

10) Devices near my iMac: iPad 2 Wifi, iPhone 5, iPhone 4

These are all the symptoms/measures that I observed and took but so far none of them worked and the mouse is becoming more erratic and I'm thinking of getting a new one if its a hardware issue.

So if anyone would be able to give some advice, I would be grateful for your help. Thanks.

Is this mouse connected at the same time as the Magic Mouse? If so, unplug it.

    Try resetting the PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14222

Try putting it on a mouse pad.

    Hi Barry

    Thanks for the advice.

I tried unplugging the Prolink mouse and resetting the PRAM AND putting it on a mousepad. it worked relatively smoothly for the first few seconds, but it went erratic again after that. All the while, my other bluetooth mouse was switched off and unplugged.

Leaning towards hardware issue now. Thanks anyway.

Try testing the mouse on another computer.   If the store you bought it from is nearby, ask them.   If the green light is solid, you have a good connection.   If it occasionally has a fit of blinking, you may have a battery problem.  Scan through this document to see if anything applies to you.

Same problem.  Mouse has worked fine for several years and started acting up.  Did all the recommended fixes, by accident tested it on another machine with similar results to verify it wasn't a software issue.  Put in on my dark wood desktop and it worked perfectly, tried it on both a glossy black binder cover and a glossy white binder cover with a color printed page underneath the plastic slip cover of the white one, same perfect results. Makes no sense given it use to work on any surface.

I would really like to know why this problem raises its ugly head after several years of excellent service.  Especially since there are no moving parts in this thing.  You would think it would last forever....but then Apple couldn't sell us new stuff and pad their pockets....
