You can see the photos but Aperture can't find the originals. They are inaccessible

I try to update paths and libraries but it takes hours then fails to access the photos.

That can happen for several reasons, that Aperture cannot locate the original files. E.g., if the library has been moved to a network drive, if the library has been incorrectly restored from a backup, if the originals have been accessed from a different user account, by syncing the library in a cloud storage, or by accidentally deleting the originals.

We need to know more to be able to understand the problem:

  • Where are your originals stored? Are you referencing your original image files on an external drive, or are they managed inside the Aperture library?
  • Are your original image files still there, where they should be, or are the really missing?
  • What is your Aperture version and MacOS X verssion?
  • And what happenend directly before the problem occurred?
