I try to update paths and libraries but it takes hours then fails to access the photos.

That can happen for several reasons, that Aperture cannot locate the original files. E.g., if the library has been moved to a network drive, if the library has been incorrectly restored from a backup, if the originals have been accessed from a different user account, by syncing the library in a cloud storage, or by accidentally deleting the originals.
We need to know more to be able to understand the problem:
Léonie
The originals are on a vault in external USB drive, and as far as I know are still there.
Mac 10.9.2
Aperture 3.5.1
this has been ongoing for years, I just get mad every now and then and try to recover a couple of the old vaults
Originals in a vault are not accessible to an Aperture library.
You need to better describe your setup, what is it you are trying to do.
