Will the Apple TV output sound via the HDMI AND the optical at the same time?

I want to connect to a external amp & to my TV from the Apple TV. I am thinking of buying a DAC for the optical output to run into my amp & the HDMI goes straight to the TV. Will this work?

Apple TV (3rd generation), iOS 7.1
