MacBook Pro renames folders on it's own & has been emptying trash for weeks ?

Has anyone else had this problem ? This MacBook Pro is about a year old, it is running 10.9.2. Before the last OS update it erased Safari on it's own, then I went to empty the trash one day and it has been doing it ever since. Now it has started to rename the file folders with randon symbols and letters on it's own. Short of reinstalling the software and starting over I am at a loss. Any suggestions ?. ............. Thanks

MacBook Pro (13-inch Late 2011), OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

I'm assuming you have a mechanical hard drive. You say it's a year old, but your profile description says late 2011.

Your hard drive may be failing. Boot to the Recovery partition by holding down the Command and R keys at startup and run Disk Utility. Choose the repair option. If it comes back with SMART errors, you'll be losing the drive soon. In any event, I'd make sure I had backups.
