No insert key

I've been currently searching for a way to use the elusive insert function on my macbook pro. I use an Ubuntu server with just the cli and in order to alter any of the config files remotely I need the insert function. I've tried all the different combinations of the fn key among many other methods. If anyone has any other methods I would be really grateful.
