On my 2006 17" iMac desktop it had a white screen with a blinking question mark in a folder bi put in the OS X disk 1 and went through the steps. On step three, why doesn't it give me any options to choose a destination to install the software on?

Your hard drive has failed and needs to be replaced.

That can be done at your local Apple retailer. Firstly, make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.

A hard drive will likely run around $100.00. I'm not sure what the installation charge would be, so I'm guessing around $85.00.

They will keep your old drive.

Kappy, That model iMac is now shown as "vintage" and an Apple store will likely not work on it.

You can still check with an Apple store but you may need to look for an Authorized Service provider who still works on older Macs to get the repairs done. If you give us a rough Idea of where you are, we may be able to recommend something.

Surely, they can replace a hard drive. That isn't a special part. If they refuse service then they can refer her to a local Apple tech.
