On my 2006 17" iMac desktop it had a white screen with a blinking question mark in a folder bi put in the OS X disk 1 and went through the steps. On step three, why doesn't it give me any options to choose a destination to install the software on?

I can't figure out the solution to the blinking question mark on my screen because when I put the OS X disc 1 it tells me how to reinstall it. But when it asks me to choose a destination , there aren't any destinations for me to choose. It's just blank and I can't continue. How can I get options for me to choose to show up?please help.

Your hard drive has failed and needs to be replaced.

That can be done at your local Apple retailer.

Kappy, That model iMac is now shown as "vintage" and an Apple store will likely not work on it.

Lorrena,

You can still check with an Apple store but you may need to look for an Authorized Service provider who still works on older Macs to get the repairs done. If you give us a rough Idea of where you are, we may be able to recommend something.

Thank you. The closest apple store near me is cherry creek in Colorado. I will ask them what they can do about my hard drive.
