i have an ipad 1; software will not update beyond ios5.1.1

i have an Ipad 1, it will not update beyond ios5.1.1. How do I update to latest version of software?

iPod touch, iOS 4.3.3

It's not supposed to. That iPad isn't capable of running iOS 6 or 7.
