Q: Thunderbolt to monitor sleep issues

I have a MacBook Pro 13 inch late 2011 which I use with a Lacie thunderbolt drive. Putting the MBP and the drive to sleep is OK when I just close the lid. Using the menu and click sleep had an issue. So I always closed the lid of the laptop for sleep.

Now I have added a monitor with a cable from the thunderbolt drive to DisplayPort of the monitor. Everything seemed fine. But quite often the thunderbolt drive does not appear on my MBP on my desktop after sleep. It can be ok for hours, and then suddenly after getting it out of sleep after several hours the message appears 'drive not ejected correctly'. I have tried several combinations of putting the MBP and the rest to sleep, but after some time the same problem pops up again, the drive disappears from my desktop and I have to reboot the MBP.

I noticed that some people have similar issues with connecting a thunderbolt display.

It seems that the only way to have everything work normally is to shut down the MBP (which shuts down the drive and puts the monitor in energy saving mode). Then it's just a matter of powering the MBP up again and the drive and monitor will also become active.

But I'd like to have a safe sleep function back. Now the sleep function is having this issue of not correctly ejecting the thunderbolt drive. It works fine for a short time, then somewhat later this problem appears.

I have now connected my macbook pro to the monitor with a USB to VGA adapter. The monitor works fine, just as with the cable from MiniDisplayPort on the external thunderbolt drive to DisplayPort on the monitor. But the same problem exists in this case as well.

It is fine for an hour or so, the sleep function works normally. After wake all devices start up again. But after several hours of sleep it wakes up with the drive removed from the desktop and the message: drive not ejected properly.

It seems to be the same problem people have with a thunderbolt display. In my case it's the external drive that is ejected.

So, I guess it's a problem Apple will have to tackle.
