No longer see iPhone icon on desktop when I connect

I simply want to import pictures from my iPhone5 to my Window8 PC like I have down many times in the past.

Previously plugged phone in to USB and iPhone icon displayed in the desktop as external device.

The icon no longer appears. Also, keep getting message on phone asking if I trust the computer. I

choose the Trust option and then nothing happens.

Please help. Something that was very simple has now become complicated.
