I would recommend resetting your system's PRAM.

Thanks for your suggestion. I did do as you suggested and there was no change. So I did it a few more times and still no difference. The monitor does say it has a resolution of 2560 x 1440 but the DVI is set at 1920 x 1080. I cannot force the resolution to change at the monitor end. It is quite obvious the iMac is setting the resolution and the only two choices I have now are 720p or 1080p.
I will attach the Display window to show what I get... whoops looks like that didn't work, image was too big.
