iBooks shows a red circle with number 1 in it. How do I get rid of it?

In the top left corner of my iBooks app (next to the store link) there is a red circle w/ the number one in it. I though it was a notification, but when i click on it all it does is take me the bookstore. Anyone know what it means or how to get rid of it?

Things I've already tried: closeing the app then re-starting it, selected every tab option in bookstore, looked through both on my phone and not on my phone purchases, logged into itunes (shows no book notifications), powered down the phone, went into an apple store and spoke with an Apple Associate (never heard of notifications in iBooks), and my Apple care plus is expireed.

iPhone 5s, iOS 7.0.5

The badge count indicates that you have an update available for one of your ibooks - if you go to the Purchased tab in the ibookstore in the app and the select the Updates link is there a book shown with an available update : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5558

Once in iBooks i select store then purchased. The only options from that point is all and not on my iphone. There is no options to download anything. But there is a 1 next to purchased as if there should be an update option.

Looks like that HT5558 page is out-of-date, the screenshots on it appear to be for pre-iOS. If you go down the list of books on that screen do any have an update button or similar - none of mine have had updates so I'm not sure how they show on iOS 7

No. there are not any update options presenting themselves. I connected to wifi thinking it was a can only update on wifi type thing, but still nothing.

Judging by this post it looks like you can't easily see which book has an update : https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5572361?answerId=23988581022#23988581022

So I think the iOS 7 version of the iBooks may have lost the functionality that is shown on the HT5558 page - as I haven't had any updates I can't speak from experience.

Do you have many books downloaded into the app so that you can check them via the main part of the store ?
