Ever since IOS7.1 update, I accidentally put people on mute, speakerphone, facetime or hangup on them from phone touching my face. I have an iphone 4 and never had this problem before the update. I have NOT changed the case on the phone.

Hi. I am also facing the same problem. This is embarrassing and frustrating and I couldn't even stop it or switch it back to normal. I was forced to converse on my speakerphone the entire time while trying to figure out how to switch it back as there were no such options on the screen and I couldn't even hang up!

Not at all. What you describe has nothing to do with the proximity sensor issue described by the OP of this thread.
Assuming you use iOS 7.1 (you didn't say): To switch speaker phone on or off, touch the obvious speaker icon on the screen.
Update to ios7.1 causing face dialing problems.
