Im doing a research report on 3 different tablets and their ability to be used in the kitchen.
does anyone know whether or not any of the ipads are safe to use in the kitchen, meaning splash proof, heat safe near stove?
any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not really splash proof. Water can damage components and will void the warranty if it gets into the humidity sensor.
Heat, the iPad has a specified operating temperature range. Unless you plan on placing it directly on top of a flame, I would not worry too much. Anything a normal human can withstand in terms of temperature the iPad can too.

there are cases for the iPad that make it waterproof, (at least according to Apple's ad of people using the iPad underwater!)
So you should be able to find some kind of case that will make it splash proof. You can look up the tech specs to see the maximum operating temperature ... but I wouldn't recommend putting it directly on a hot burner or in a hot over!
I think it all depends on how sloppy a person is in the kitchen. And how much room they have to maneuver. If there's a concern there are cases out there that offer moisture protection.
