Latest version is Version XI (11.0.06).

Is it worth downloading and trying that.

If it were me, I would quit any open browser, move the following to the Trash, and empty it. Then download/install the latest 11.0.06 Reader. Once it is reinstalled, use Disk Utility to verify/repair permissions. You will have to run Reader and agree to the terms, before you can use the browser plug-ins.

Home Library folder hiding on you, press command+J in the Finder and set the Library folder to visible (in 10.9+).

/Applications/Adobe Reader

/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/AdobePDFViewer.plugin, AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin

your home directory/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Acrobat

Adobe Reader V 11.0.03 will not open.
