Trouble getting into App Store?

Trying to download a newer OS which I bought through Mac store. Paid online with a credit card and received an e-mail with a download code, but the Mac App Store doesn't recognize my Apple ID-- I get a message saying "your device or computer could not be verified." How do I get in?! The Mac website itself recognizes my Apple ID just fine.
