How do I restore my system

To cut a long story short, I had the kind of no entry sign on my MacBook Pro on start up and it would not do anything. After trying many many things from forums etc I realise the I need to restore the system. Trouble is it just won't let me. I follow all the instructions get on the disk utility try to erase the drive and it just says "couldn't uncountable disk" . Then I try to re-install OS X and it says "an error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running this application again. It is really do my head in. I have never had this much grief with all the windows based system I have had in the past, why exactly did I pay a fortune for this thing.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

I meant "couldn't unmount disk"

What if I replace the hdd. How do I go about restore the system without any disks?

There is a hardware fault, but it's not necessarily the drive. Before you spend any money on replacement parts, take the machine to an Apple Store for testing.

Thanks for the reply however I have now sorted it. The disk would not erase because I was trying to delete the complete drive including recovery hd. With some research I found that OS X would not re-install because the system date was wrong. Changing the using terminal meant I could install OS X.
