spinning wheel of death

How do I fix the spinning wheel? It keeps freezing my computer up and won't stop. This has been going on for months now. I have tried to reboot in safe mode and run disk utilities but nothing works. 😕

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

View â–¹ Show Log List

from the menu bar.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough. It is never necessary or helpful to post more than about 100 lines. "The more, the better" is not the rule here.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Link Davis, I want to thank you for trying to help me. My brain is in fog due to my Mom dying a few weeks ago. Please have patience with me.

I got rid of the Mackeeper. I had to reinstall it because I could NOT find it on my computer anywhere. Then I deleted it in the trash. Still having the annoying spinning wheel problem. 😢

I also have one more problem. Maybe you could help. When I reboot a circle with a slash goes throught it and nothing happens unless I reboot again and hold the Option Key down and then have to pick between Macintosh HD or Macintosh HD 2. I can only pick the HD 2 for my computer to open. 😕

I just don't know what happened to my computer! I had Show Leopard and then upgraded to Mountain Lion. Now, I don't know what I have because someone suggested going back to a different date on Timeline. Now everything is out of wack. 😟

Would you be interested in seeing the etesoft report?

I did what someone else suggested before you posted and ran the http://etresoft.com/etrecheck

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It makes no changes to your data.

Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

{ diskutil list; echo; diskutil cs list; } | pbcopy

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.

Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered.

The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message.

The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.

If any personal information appears in the output, anonymize before posting, but don’t remove the context.

Not sure if I did this right but this is what it says. And I did NOT hit the return button on this until I know for sure it's right. After I copied the command I waited 5 minutes and no $ sign showed up so I hit return and all of this came up.

It's not anything I did knowingly. I just tried lots of things that that people posted trying to fix the spinning wheel and something got screwed up. I am trying everything I can NOT to have to take my computer in to have it fixed. I don't want to keep it this way. I'm very glad that you're at least trying to help me out.

I didn't hit return on the other step. Should I???

spinning wheel of death
