Syncing iPad Contacts with Outlook 2010

I have an issue where a coworker uses his iPad to manage his contacts. His iPad is set up with his Exchange account to sync email, calender, contacts and notes.

When using Outlook to manage contacts he can add new contacts and make changes to existing contacts. In both cases the changes quickly sync across to the iPad.

When using the iPad to manage contacts he can add new contacts and change anything except the contact notes with the new contacts or changes syncing across to Outlook.

However, if he makes any changes to the contact notes then these are saved on the iPad but the notes for the related contact are wiped clean in Outlook.

I've been unable to replicate the issue with other iPads or Exchange accounts but am hesitant to remove/reset anything on the iPad in question as there is now significant data on the iPad that refuses to sync accross that I don't want to risk losing.

Does anyone have idea what the cause of this is and how to go about fixing it?

The issue could be with the Exchange account. If this is the case, you would need to set it up again. However, it's far easier to backup the iPad, go into Settings > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings and delete everything from the iPad. Once the iPad has been wiped clean and is running iOS 7.1, setup the Exchange account and test it. If it works, restore the iPad and retest it. It should still work at this point, but if it doesn't, there may be an issue with one of the other apps, though this is unlikely. If it doesn't work, the issue may be in the account on the server. We had something similar happen at my old job because the Exchange Admin forgot to adjust a setting for a mobile user. I'm not sure what the settings were, and I no longer work at that job, so I cannot help if the problem is on the server side.

The answer to iTunes vs iCloud is subjective and has been the topic of numerous heated debates. On the one hand, iTunes gives you control of your data. On the other hand, iCloud will allow you to backup/restore/access your data anywhere. The choice is really a personal one. I hope that answers your question without really answering it 😉
