Why can I only see the background?

I recently trie changing the resolution on my MacBook Pro, when it didn't work I did an NVRAM reset, this has now caused my useable window to disappear and all I can see is the background. I have no side bar, no bar at the top of the screen, nothing to be able to use my laptop. How do I get it back?
