iTunes just wont start!

Hi,

this is really odd! I've been happily using iTunes for over a year and had no problems at all. Suddenly when I start itunes or plug in my iPod it just comes up with the hourglass and then pops up an error reporting window. I have tried sending the report, also having a look myself. It doesn't give me a link to a description of what happened or tell me much from the error report. I've tried uninstalling itunes (and Quicktime) then reinstalling several times over the past few days, I even went through the registry deleting appropriate keys after none of this worked and tried again (did uninstall, found some relavent keys and removed them). Even then, I just get the same error. Please, please help! :o(

Oh, I'm using Windows XP SP2. It's been installed for 6 - 12 months. The only things that have happened recently worth mentioning are that after removing my VPN client software and changig antivirus I had to fix the TCP/IP stack/winsock catalog (wasn't getting DNS resolution through any browser, the VPN client had done something to my TCP/IP ;o))

Let me know what info you need if you think you can help.

Possible thoughts I've had are: getting the correct list of registry keys and removing them after a full uninstall - also any Application Data / other hidden folder or C:\WINDOWS stuff - or .dll's even! this combined with about a million reboots! Then reinstalling without a trace of the previous install.

thanks in advance...

Sounds like a particular version of malware that is afflicting Windows users that is causing this errorless crash of iTunes. Go here and download this malware removal program that is free and about the only one that is capable of findning this malware. http://www.ewido.net/en/
Post back if you still have problems. Run that Ewido scan every week or so from here on out.

Oh crap, I hate that particular error. I would tell you to boot into safe mode and remove Quicktime.

to Verify That All QUICKTIME Files Are Removed
Go to: Start/Find/Files or Folders.

Enter QuickTime as one word in the Name box.

Click Find Now (be sure you are in the C drive of your computer).

Confirm that the following files are NOT on your computer. If they are still on your computer, delete them.

QuickTimeInstaller.ini

QuickTimeInstaller.exe

QuickTimeInstallCache.qdat

then reboot your computer
OR
Close the program tray icon (lower right corner of taskbar) before trying to remove (or installing standalone)? ( or ctrl alt del and close these first: iTunesHelper.exe, qttask.exe)

or:
Start - Run - copy and paste this into the run box:

C:\WINDOWS\unvise32qt.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\QuickTime\Uninstall.log

(check to see if there is a file "uninstall.log" in the C:\WINDOWS\System32\QuickTime folder)

last resort (since you cant get rid of it anyway) -
delete c:\program files\quicktime folder and c:\windows\system32\quicktime folder
run regedit - delete these keys:
HKEY LOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Quic kTime
HKEY LOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\Apple Computer, Inc.\QuickTime

OK, thanks for your help. I've been through the registry and searched QuickTime and deleted most entries, and gone through my user profile, system 32 etc. I have uninstalled iTunes too (but not done the whole manual thing as it uninstalled fine).
I'm running the spyware scan now too.

I'll reboot once it's finished scanning and report back ;o)

Thanks again.

Hello again, OK, not good news 😝

I restarted my PC after doing a full spyware scan and removig what I mentioned above.
Now when I try to install iTunes, I get this error on the QuickTime installation:

Error applying transforms. Verify that the specified transform paths are valid.
C:\WINDOWS|Installer\{C21D5524-A970-42FA-AC8A-59B8C7CDCA31}\1033.MST

That pops up with an 'OK' button and it wont go any further.

Any ideas? :o)

Still cant get the old version of QuickTime off....it's always there in add/remove progs, only showing it using about 0.62MB though. And now i've installed the new iTunes+QuickTime 'bundle' and when I start iTunes the error is that I'm using 7.0.2 quickTime and it requires 7.0.3 or higher...

But I'd like to clean it up and remove the old QuickTime and get this working, but I need to do a full manual uniinstall of the bits of QuickTime that are remaining...I have tried a lot of ways to do this, but I'm obviously missing something - so if anyone can provide a document, link or something to show ALL the files installed by QuickTime, and the regustry entries so I can go and manually remove each and every one!

I guess if I use an older version of iTunes that isn't dependent on the newer QuickTime, that might work...I'll have a look for a download of it... it should be available on apple site - shouldn't it?

I have been using iTunes for over a year and only had minor issues, but recently any time I try to use iTunes, I get an error message of
"Quicktime version 7.0d0 is installed, iTunes requires Quicktime version 7.0.3 or later.
Please reinstall iTunes."
However, I have reinstalled itunes and quicktime several times and restarted my computer several times as well.
Also, when I forgot and tried to link from a new music tuesday email, it said itunes couldn't be found on my computer.

If anyone knows anything please HELP!
