Why do you think <command> + s does not work? Not saying it does work just trying to understand the symtoms.
When I try to save using Command S, I get an sound that indicates it did not work and the "edited" flag on the spreadsheet does not disappear. The "edited" flag disappears when I hit File>Save.
did you assign <command> + s to another menu item in System Preferences?
Thanks for the suggestion. I did not assign command + s to any other menu item in System Preferences, but to be sure, I set all to defaults. I still can't save a spreadsheet using command + s.
In apps other than Numbers is command + s still working?

command + s does not work in Pages either.
How about command+s in other apps that have it? I'm thinking this may be a system-wide problem on your machine. (I assume you've already tried the whole shutdown-and-restart-the-Mac thing, and all that.)

By trying Command+s in another app I was able to determine that Command+s had been assigned to Text-to-Speech capability. Text-to-Speech did not work in Pages or Numbers, so Command+s only gave me the mistake sound. So I went to System Preferences>Dictation and Speech>Text-to-Speech and changed the keys assigned to "Speak selected text when the key is pressed". But I had to shut down and restart before it took effect. Now I can save in Pages and Numbers using Command+s. Thanks for all the help.
