Have you tried resetting your iPod?: hold the "menu" + "select" (center) buttons together for about 7 seconds. Then the Apple logo will appear on the screen.
I know you've "wiped out the entire play list and started fresh", but have you tried restoring your iPod? See this link about it:
Restoring shuold take about 5 minutes. This process will delete the music off your iPod, but will not affect your iTunes library. Restoring isn't just deleting songs, because it can definetely clear up glitches in your iPod.

Currently Being ModeratedAug 16, 2006 5:21 PM (in response to iPod_nano_1_GB)Hey there .. thanks for the tip but I have an Ipod Shuffle thus I don't have a screen nor a menu to choose from. Just an on off switch at the back which choose Shuffle or to play the songs in order.
P.S. I will look at the Restore Ipod thing .. thanks for mentioning that.Intel, Windows XP

No, resetting the software on the Ipod did not work. I ended up going to a MAC dealer and explained the problem and what I had done to correct it. They completely agreed with my methodogy and suggested that I ask for a replacement Shuffle as this one has something physically wrong with it. I am waiting for the replacement now.
