Q: connecting macbook pro to tv

I've been trying to connect my mac pro (2008) to my tv (picture & sound) & nobody seems to know which adaptor/cable is needed (not even at the apple store!), I'm getting frustrated because it's a few times I buy cables for nothing! help!
