Q: Can the mini be connected to a HD TV?

I am considering buying a Mac mini. I have a small Samsung HD TV. Can I connect the mini to this TV or do I have to purchase a monitor?

No, you don't have to buy a monitor. However using a TV as your monitor will mean that your maximum resolution will never be any higher than 1920x1200, not very high by today's graphics standards.

Depending upon the TV input, you can get higher than 1920x1200 via the MiniDispay port/Thunderboolt connector

Not if the TV's native resolution is no greater than 1080p. And I'm not thinking he's talking about a 4k TV.

Actually, the limitation will be 1920x1080, in lieu of 1920x1200, because HDTVs are 16:9, not 16:10. And, some small HDTVs may max out less than that.
