Request for hotmail password is blocking settings screen

On my wife's iPad the settings screen is locked by a sign saying Password Incorrect, enter the password for the Hotmail account "Hotmail". My wife has tried all the passwords she can think of and it is not responding. Can anyone advise how to bypass this as I need to use the settings screen to enter a Wi Fi code so the machine can be used. It only has Wi Fi on it.
