A teacher dropped her Macbook Pro 13 in late 2011. I was able to firewire in and verify disk, it checked out OK. Opened the machine, reseated the hard drive, RAM and battery. Made sure all connections were tight. i am able to CMD-R into recovery but choosing the Startup DIsk just brings me back to the grey screen and spinning wheel. Also reset PRAM and SMC. any help would be appreciated.

That means almost nothing, disk utility cannot see many damaged HD.
Ive had a couple mechanically destroyed HD verify fine in disk utility, it cannot verify many times, genuine mechanical HD failure.
If you can see the content of the failed Mac by use of FireWire connection
you may also be able to attempt to save some of the owner's works from it.
Is that MacBook/Pro this one?
