When I send an attachment from my iMAC to pc users they cant open them.
iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)
In the mail menu bar using the Edit drop down list, check "Always send Windows friendly attachments" under the Attachments line.
What format are the attachments? If they are PDF or Word they should be OK, If you are sending Pages files they will have problems unless you export them to a Windows compatible format.

Thank you for the response. I am already selecting "Windows Friendly Attachments" and making sure the attachment is always added at the end of the email message. Still having the same problem (with most recepients, not all). The files in question are PDF and Word docs.

Try selecting Mail>Edit>Attachments>"Always Sent-Windows Friendly Attachments."
If you send a Mail to your self, preferably sending to a different account if you have one. Can you open the attachments yourself?
Are you including the file suffix on the attachment files? Windows is fussy about these little things!
