Q: Files deleted from the Library and now internet doesn't work?

Hello,

I'm new here and this is probably going to sound dumb but... my father deleted some files from the Library by mistake and now internet doesn't work in his computer. Everything seems normal, but the webpages don't load (we tried lots of pages and 3 browsers). If you try to update any software it can't connect to the internet either.

He reinstalled the system (it's Mountain Lion, I think) but it didn't worked (it was a partial reinstallation, without losing the data). He also tried restarting and pressing CMD-R but nothing happened.

Any ideas on how to solve this problem? Thank you so much in advance! (and sorry for any typos, English is not my native language)

Hello Eleone, & a warm Welcome!

So what exactly isn't working or any messages you get?

    Does Mail still work?

    Might try this...

Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712

    10.5, 10.6, 10.7 & 10.8…

System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.

    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x/10.8.x instructions...

System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.

The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.

    If using Wifi/Airport...

Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

    208.67.222.222

    208.67.220.220

(There may be better or faster DNS numbers in your area, but these should be a good test).

    Click OK.

Thank you for the welcome, and thank you so much for the reply. Unfortunately, we just tried what you suggested but it didn't work

The message we get when trying to access a webpage is simply "this webpage is not available". No matter what you try to load, it won't work. It doesn't matter if we're using Safari, Firefox or Chrome. Mail doesn't work either, we can read old emails but if you try to refresh and load new emails, it doesn't work.

We tried making a New Location, joining our network like you said, and adding the DNS numbers you suggested, but nothing happened. The computer seem to be connected to internet properly but nothing works. Oh, other computers in my house work fine, it's just my father's, and it stopped working right after he deleted the files from the Library, so we think this is the problem.

My father told me that most of the filed he deleted were .plist, but we really have no idea if this is relevant or not. We can't be sure if every file was restored when the reinstallation was done, but it appears that something is missing and we don't know what to do to solve the problem.

Do you know if they were in Library, System>Library, or Users>Library folder?

Reinstall should replace ones in the first 2, did you Repair Permissions afterwards?

    If the latter...

To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...

Open System Preferences>Users & Groups, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.

Does it work in the new account?

The files were in System>Library. We tried repairing permissions but that didn't solve the problem either.

My father did a reinstallation from the update CD for Mountain Lion (but it didn't do anything), we'll try again with the old operative system that came with the computer. I hope this will solve the problem.

Thank you very much for your help, I'll let you know if it works.

Well, it turns out my father ended up calling a technician... I told him we could solve the problem doing a reinstallation, but he chose to have the whole computer checked (it had other issues, e.g. one of the hard drives stopped working months ago). But yes, the Library problem solved with the reinstallation (that was the first thing the technician did hahaha). Thank you for your help!
