I've installed Ubuntu alongside OS X in a partition only 45GB and I have 50GB left of unallocated space.
My question is, will either OS X or Ubuntu use the unallocated space when it's partition is full or do I have to play with the sizes of the partition?

It won't be automatically applied to either; you need to resize the partition immediately above the unallocated space to occupy that space first. If that space is at the beginning of the drive, it isn't possible to reallocate it without deleting the first partition.

Thanks for getting back so quickly.
How do I resize the partitions? In disk utility it won't let me touch any of the partitions. Unallocated space is at the bottom of the list of partitions as well if that indicates anything.
Click on the partition just above it and drag the slider at the bottom as far down as it will go.

It wont let me drag and resize the paritions.
I saw what was the matter with that last post and worked out that I couldnt expand that first partision. So I decided to delete the other partitions and start again but it wont let me delete that last partition which is Linux Swap not OS X extended (journaled). . Any ideas on what I can do?
